Useful Timeline Exercise

Chao- Here's a Christmas gift for anyone who stumbles upon this entry! Chao once had an English/Literature teacher who assigned her students to make a timeline for stories we had read. Guess it was to help us sort out the story and understand what the heck was happening in them. (Anyone remember carrying around those LARGE textbooks filled with stories of different genres that ask dumb questions at the end?) Well, here's a little something that can help organize your story, whether you're planning a fan fic or something original.

    • "They often take pleasure in solitary activities such as reading, writing, using computers, hiking and fishing." (Wikipedia)
  • Extrovert

    • "Extraverts tend to enjoy human interactions and to be enthusiastic, talkative, assertive, and gregarious.
    • "They take pleasure in activities that involve large social gatherings, such as parties, community activities, public demonstrations, and business or political groups." (Wikipedia)

      1. What disrupts the character from his/her normal life?
      2. What does he/she decide to do about it?
        1. How will it affect others he/she knows?
(Must have a minimum of three events filled out; it expands the story better)

  1. Conclusion: What type of exciting and unexpected ending will there be?
    1. Does the protagonist achieve his/her dream/goal?
    2. Does someone die at the end?
    3. Does the antagonist convert sides?

Recommended Books for Writing

Chao- While browsing libraries, bookstores, and used bookstores, Chao came upon a good set of books that are very helpful in writing stories. The series is called Write Great Fiction. They are done by different authors but contain the same style and tone. The collection contains Description and Setting; Plot and Structure; Dialogue; Characters, Emotions and Viewpoint; and Revising and Editing. The books are written in like one writer talking to another, very casual. They speak from experience. There are given examples about their advice, quotes, bullet ideas, and even a few exercises every chapter.

Chao- So if you stumble upon these books, take a look at them and see if they're any help to you. You can also browse the Nonfiction section of any book place and see what you can find about writing. There are some that deal with plot and character while others deal with essays for school. Some contain the advice in bullet points, or they are written like a storybook. If books aren't your thing, or you have no access to a library or bookstore, there are still plenty of good websites that can help you out. You just have to type in what you're looking for in a search engine, and, chances are, you'll find sites to help out. There are authors willing to help others out!

Updates for December

Chao- With finals coming up and cleaning the house for Christmas and New Years, Chao honestly doesn't know when anything can be worked on. But here's a newsfeed for this month.

Yu-Gi-Oh!: A couple of one shots will try and be posted, like Cries of the Forgotten, The Vow, and a sequel to Social Obligations. Offspring of Heroes and Where I Belong have a few future portions written, but their updates are still on hiatus.

Phineas and Ferb: No current news at this time. There will be a few posts in the future for writing advice using PnF characters.

Cats Don't Dance: No current news at this time.

Chao- Maybe a few things can happen after exams. Chao will also try and get back to anyone who has sent a PM. Sorry for any delays. There may also be another update halfway through this month.

A Temporary Hiatus

Chao- So any story that is already published or any promised one shots/stories will be on pause for a bit. Got a one shot project in the making that's important. It's essential that for any story a writer keeps a goal in mind, other than just telling a story. In a past fan fic Chao had the purpose to practice on character and scenery detail, which went pretty well. This next one will be focused on emotion and action. Why put such attention into a one shot? To practice for future chapters and stories. Each time Chao sets a goal for a story, whether it's a one shot or a chapter story, Chao likes to apply the newly learned material into them. So, hope you all can wait and by happy with the result.

Exercise Within the Fan Fic

(This entry was last edited 1/30/13)

Chao- A lot of us want to tell our story the best we can. We must remember descriptions of characters, their actions, and their surroundings. Whatever we write about a character needs to be believable. We just can't say a character is nice, smart, arrogant, a hero, a villain or athletic without proof. We can't say their home is a wreck if there's no description of unorganized boxes, rotting trash, or clothes that haven't been washed in weeks stay on the floor.

Example: "The boy's room was messy. His mother always nagged him to clean it up. She said he could win the Messy Room Award one day. He didn't want to do his chore because he'd much rather play his videogames."

Chao- Is this really convincing that a room is messy? Perhaps not. But this is seen in many fan fics, and readers need to take the word of the author. Fans are already aware of certain character traits. We see this in the actual world of the character whether it's through a TV show or book. And even though readers may overlook this, as an author it is your job to show what world your character lives in, even for a fan fics.

Example revised: "The boy's room was messy. His floor that had once been a clean creamed color carpet was now covered with his untidy clothing. Piles and piles of wrinkled jeans, T-shirts marked up with juice stains, and disregarded rolled up socks layered the ground. His wooden desk underneath the window was shrouded in unorganized school papers and his collections of monster action figures and trading cards. Inside his drawer were his disorderly school supplies. He had some unsharpened pencils and cases of pens that no longer worked. His tape was crumpled up, and he never knew where his scissors vanished to. His miniscule grey trashcan nearby with a clear garbage bag was empty, but plenty of crumpled up tissues and clothing tags littered the area around it. His unkempt bed tangled in orange sheets and a misshapen pillow. His closet was no better. A place that would be utilized for hanging clothes and storing boxes was always shut due to all his junk of old school projects and costume pieces clogged the space.

"His mother always nagged him to clean it up. She couldn't stand the stench of rotting food. She had given him a few spray bottles to improve aroma, but he lost them. She once threatened to go in and pack everything up and donate it to charity. She said he could win the Messy Room Award one day.

"He didn't want to do his boring chore because he'd much rather play his videogames. He couldn't be bothered with something as time consuming as hanging up his clothes and investigated his papers to see which ones to keep when he was so close to the final boss. Plus he enjoyed the chaotic room; he knew where everything was, even if it took him several minutes just to find a clean outfit to wear."

Chao- That was an example showing the boy's room was messy. We saw how his room was messy (naming a few items and their condition), how it affected someone around him (his mother and what she tried to do about it), and a why he didn't want to do it (he was lazy and more interested in his game). That was for a setting. It's also important to add traits to characters' appearances and attitudes.

Example 2: "The girl was very pretty and fashionable. As she walked down the sidewalk on her way to a friend's house, people would stop to look at her. She was smart and caring despite taking pride in her looks."

Chao- So again we see something like this in fan fics. And we do get these examples in visuals if we watch an Anime or read a Manga. But when reading someone else's work, people are impress with how much detail is within the words. Aside from a good plot, people want a story that is easy to understand.

Example 2 revised. "The girl was pretty and fashionable. Her long brown hair flowed passed her shoulders. Her split ends free locks glowed as the sun shone down. She carefully brushes it often, cautious to not yank. Her blue eyes sparkled with care. She acted vigilant to never strain them with dim lighting.

"As she walked down the sidewalk on her way to a friend's house, people would stop to look at her. Her white blouse pressed gently against her upper body and down her thin waist. An open rose short sleeved shirt covered right on top of that. Her blue jean skirt flew down, resting just above her knees. Though bystanders were awestruck with the view, they did not know they had been charmed with her bright smile most of all.

"Despite taking pride in her looks, she was smart and caring. She earned good grades, awarding her a spot on the honor roll system at her school. She was on her way to a friend's house to help tutor her in math. Their teacher meant well, but the students sometimes were lost in the lectures. She could only hope her friend had at least tried to do the work; she would not spoon feed the answers."

Chao- Why should any of this matter? Readers need to be convinced of what authors write, especially if authors try and write something for an original work outside of fan fics. It is good practice. One way to practice is to find a place for practice. Every word in stories count. If authors write one shots, it be a good way to focus on one aspect at a time. Maybe one one shot could be for plot, another for character description, and another for settings. (The same could also be applied to chapters.) It is ok for fans to place in their own ideas while reading, like their own impression with a classroom, but if you have an idea in your head of how you want something to look like, whether it is a character or a place, then go ahead and type it up. But if you don't know what either one looks like, neither will your readers, especially in original work.

Chao- And Chao agrees with him.

9. Ten (Kaiba) ignored you all the time.

Chao- Well, fine! Chao will ignore you, too!

Chao- Fine! Be that way! See if you're ever in another fan fic!

Kaiba- (types away on computer)

Chao- Oh it's in now! (types away on computer)

10. Two serial killers are hunting you down. What will One (Danny) do?

Chao- Fight them in a dance off! Cuz he’s awesome like that!

11. You're on vacation with number Two (Yugi) and you manage to break your leg. What does Two do?

Chao- Laugh because of all the torture Chao has put him through… The gesture will be returned in a fan fic.

12. It's your birthday. What will Three (Phineas) give you?

Chao- An awesome gadget that gives Chao the ability to write more than one fan fic at once.

13. You're stuck in a house that's on fire. What does Four (Sonic) do?

Chao- Puts it out by running around the place a lot.

14. You're about to do something that would make you feel extremely embarrassed. What will Five (Yami) do?

Chao- Yami! Put that camera away!

15. You're about to marry number Ten (Kaiba). What's Six’s (Doofenshmirtz) reaction?

Chao- Wait, what?

Doofenshmirtz- Behold! The divorce-inator! I got the idea after my incident with Charlene. I only wish I had it sooner. It so would've made the process easier!

Chao- Uh, thanks?

16. You got dumped by someone. How will Seven (Sawyer) cheer you up?

Chao- Again, wait, what?

Sawyer- What's so bad with the idea?

Chao- That would imply Chao actually was in a relationship!

17. You compete in some tournament. How does Nine (Pudge) support you?

Chao- Doing a sweet, little dance.

18. You can't stop laughing. What will Ten (Kaiba) do?

Chao- His body guards escort Chao away. But he's embarrassed from all the fun fan art pics of him.

19. One (Danny) is all you've dreamed of. Why?

Chao- Because it’s true. He's #1 for a reason. Although Two/Yugi isn't that behind.

20. Two (Yugi) tells you about his deeply hidden love for Nine(Pudge). Your reaction?

Chao- Did Yami or Joey put you up to this? And why is everyone picking on Nine!

21. You're dating Three (Phineas) and introduce him to your parents. Will they get along?

Chao- They’d either be pretty amused or disturbed that a little kid is interested in a college student. Not to mention Isabella would be extremely p!ssed.

22. Five (Yami) loves number Nine (Pudge) as well. What does that mean?

Chao- That some Meme creators really would like for Nine to get together with someone.

23. Will Five (Yami) and Six (Doofenshmirtz) ever kiss?

Chao- Not even if they were in the same dimension.

24. Six (Doofenshmirtz) appears to be a player, and he breaks many hearts. What do you do?

Chao- Quit kidding yourself and go back to building your –inators. Come on, what would your daughter and Perry think?

26. You had a haircut and Seven (Sawyer) can't stop looking at you. What goes on in your mind?

Chao- Wha? Not accustomed to the style of the new millennium?

26. Eight (Shadow) thinks he'll never get a boyfriend. What will you tell him?

Chao- Yeah, you probably won’t.

27. Nine (Pudge) gives you a bagel. Do you eat it?

Chao- Sure.

28. Ten (Kaiba) wants money and decides to get a job at Chuck E' Cheeses. How long does s/he stay?

Chao- Did someone slip an application in his pile of papers to sign? If so, that would make a pretty funny fan fic. He wouldn't even last an hour, giving him only a few dollars worth of pay. He'd go crazy from the bratty kids.

29. One (Danny) offers you a CD. Considering his taste, do you listen to it?

Chao- Well it’s music from 1939, so it depends how people like that style. But since it’s Danny, yes! Of course, he would first need to know what a CD is.

30. Three (Phineas) suddenly goes emo. How does Eight (Shadow) feel about this?

Chao- …

Shadow- He can’t pull it off. He’s soul is too cheerful.

Chao- Hey! We agreed you aren’t emo yourself! Quit acting!

31. Four (Sonic) slaps Nine (Pudge) with a fish for going out with Seven (Sawyer).

Chao- Hey, Sonic, you already had your chance with other game/comic characters! Don’t take it out on poor Pudge!

32. Five (Yami) comes up to you wearing a big pink dress. What's your reaction?

Chao- Hey, it actually fits.

33. Eight (Shadow) reads your fanfiction and complains. What is it about?

Chao- They can’t all be about you.

Updates for November

Chao- With November now in session and school having less loads of homework, let's see what's coming up for fan fics!

Yu-Gi-Oh!: Offspring of Heroes was just added with chapter 13 with chapter 14 being polished up. Where I Belong will be looked at. Dunno when the next chapter will be published for that, but there are a few good angsty scenes in the future that are being worked on. So look forward to that. There are also one shots that will be posted soon, so be on the lookout for The Vow, Cries of the Forgotten, and Social Obligation (although the title on the latter may change).

Phineas and Ferb: The Value of a Smile had several changes to the already published chapters. Gonna watch a few missed episodes and hopefully that will give inspiration for future chapters and one shots. Hope everyone enjoyed the one shot Creativity from the Heart.

Cats Don't Dance: Working on for a few one shots and a chapter story. Hopefully the chapter story will be ten chapters long.

Chao- Hopefully with less homework to worry about, writing fan fics will pop up often.

You have put make-up on others
You like being the star of almost everything
You love shoe shopping (Chao- Again with the shopping?)

Chao- That was fun. Although this meme for the girl side could benefit from having more options that doesn't pertain to a single subject. Seriously, there's more to being a girl than just shopping.

A Word of Poetry

Chao- Normally this author likes to place in author notes before and after a fan fic to explain where the inspiration came from and any notes that readers may want to know. But for three fan fics, Chao chose not to and instead focused on just writing a one shot poem for three categories. Figured it was important to just focus on the words altogether.

YChao- I thought you disliked poetry.

Chao- Yes, but this was something important, something that Chao couldn't fight.

Agent Daisy- (raises eyebrow)

Chao- Yep. The first poem was for Cats Don't Dance with Danny and his passion for dancing. It just started after watching the movie in the early morning a few times... and listening to its soundtrack... and looking at screencaps... and reading fan fics... and looking at wonderful fan art... and-

YChao- Uh oh, Chao is stuck in a world of bliss.

Agent Daisy- (grabs bucket of water) (pours it on Chao)

Chao- Huh? Oh, yeah. It all just started with wanting to write a good poem for Cats Don't Dance, but Chao figured it'd be pretty cool to expand the idea to Yu-Gi-Oh! and Phineas and Ferb.

YChao- Isn't writing poetry hard?

Chao- Yeah, it's difficult finding the right words and getting a good flow. But the passion for writing three different views on a passionate subject (as viewed by the characters) really helped. It was important to get into their minds and write how they would think and see.

Agent Daisy- (nods in agreement)

Chao- Chao doesn't know much about poetry, but here's a few websites Chao came upon while doing research about poetry writing.

http://www.famousliteraryworks.com/writing-poetry.htm

http://www.creative-writing-now.com/how-to-write-poetry.html

http://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Poem

Chao- Perhaps poetry isn't all that bad. Guess if anyone wants to write a poem of their own with no ties to fan fiction, they can always get an account on FictionPress or deviantART. And of course they always have their own blogs, like Blogger or Livejournal.

Yikes...

Chao- After finally being able to relax in the PnF world, Chao reviewed a few chapters from The Value of a Smile.... Don't really know how people could stand reading paragraph after paragraph of narration.

Agent Daisy- (shakes head in disappointment)

Chao- Hey! It seemed like a good idea at the time! Chao was able to create an atmosphere of what was happening by detailing the characters' actions and thoughts. Now Chao realizes that it's best to include space between paragraphs by adding dialogue and thinking bubbles. After all, comics involve speech and thoughts between panels of action. Readers just don't rely on pictures alone to tell them stories.

Agent Daisy- (rolls eyes)

Chao- Well, anyway, this author went back to fix some grammar mistakes (after learning a few rules in a grammar class) for The Value of a Smile and a few other PnF one shots. For future chapters of The Value of a Smile, Chao is hoping to continue this drama and psychological aftermath through more dialogue and thoughts to make the whole chapter seem more appealing. Dunno when the next chapter will be posted, but they are under work. In the meantime, hope you all will enjoy the upcoming one shot, Creativity from the Heart.

Having a Good Introduction Will Help: YGO Edition

Chao- If we are in a bookstore or library we see many books on many shelves. Some of us get our attention captured by an interesting title or artwork. But many of us know a good story lies beyond the cover. We also look at the back or the jacket for a summary. If the book company is lucky enough we'll actually rent or buy the book. And if we are satisfied we'll check it out again or keep it rather than sell it. So what's another way to capture reader's attention for writing? You can start off a story by writing a great introduction. Introductions are the first insights readers get after the cover of a story. It'll tell them how soon the writing is done (first person vs third), the setting (time and place), and perhaps a character's desire (to get something or get away from something). What's a way to get started on getting started? Take a look at this exercise.

Exercise 1: Take a published story you really enjoy and read only the introduction. (If it's a long one, then stop after the first 250-300 words.) Write out the introduction. (You can type up and print out if it's easier on the eyes to mark up, but actually write out your choice with a pencil or pen on paper first.) See what strikes you. Examine the verbs, adverbs, and adjectives they use; first person vs third; usage of commas, periods, semi-colons, dashes, etc; fragments; and the sentences using the verb "to be" (writers should know to use “to be” sparingly). See if there's any foreshadowing or character perceptions.

Exercise 2: Write in a style similar to that introduction.

Chao- Chao did this for homework using Fahrenheit 451. All these mark ups from the image below were from the first four paragraphs of the novel, only 246 words. You can always look back on old work (no matter how embarrassing) and see what you did before and what you're doing now.

Chao- Chao has done something in a similar style. Here's an introduction that will hopefully be in a fan fic some day.

"IT WAS A PLEASURE TO PLAY.

It was wonderful to sit with others to talk and move pieces around a board. With his youthful hands, instruments adopted to enlist military orders, a joy spread throughout his heart, and he planned his next step. With his pawn in his hands, and his innocent eyes glowing with pride, he moved a white piece across a checkered board. He glowed with pride. He never wanted however, like jokes seen from TV series, to take out a notepad and strike a line demonstrating his many victories over his opponent, while the reaming pieces to the game stay idly by. While some pieces were captured and moved to the side in a ruthless sacrifice for a chance to an upper hand.

Yugi grinned with joy as his grandfather praised him.

He knew he had accomplished something big, and he long for the feeling to last. Later, sleeping in his bed, the feeling would change as his heart altered from family to loneliness. He would never forget this grand feeling as long as he kept playing."

Chao- All stories begin with an introduction. If your story has a purpose, then writing will become easier.

Get Your Stuff Out There!

(This entry was last edited 1/30/13)

Chao- Writing can lead people down different paths. Some will continue only in fan fics while others will try out original stories and/or poems. Even if writers have a larger craving, what can they do about it? The answer is simple: Get your stuff out there! There are websites that are dedicated to writers publishing their work and learning new ideas for creating plots and characters. Many of us are already familiar with deviantART and Fanfiction.net, but did you know that at one point FF.net had allowed original stories?

YChao- I think so. Was I alive back then?

Agent Daisy- O.O;;

Chao- Yep! Fanfiction.net and Fictionpress.com used to be the same site. But then one day, years ago, Fictionpress was separated, giving authors a chance to write and post their original stories in a supporting place. They have two main sections: Fiction and Poetry. From there they break off into genres. Those who have yet to see the site should visit it.

http://www.fictionpress.com/

Chao- And there are other ways as well. If you're under 18 in the US, you could probably submit a short story or something like that to a local library newspaper or teen magazine. If you're in college, check out your school's newspaper or see if there are any literacy magazines that accept fiction, creatvie nonfiction, poetry, or anything like that. If you're serious about submitting, write something that carries meaning and don't be afraid to have more than one set of eyes review it. There are people who get a lot of submissions and can only publish so many per issue. Also be on the lookout for guidelines and due dates.

YChao- So why should this matter?

Chao- If people are serious about writing, it's important to get their stuff out there. It's the same for those yearning to be rock stars: becoming a published author ain't gonna happen overnight.

Having a Purpose Matters: YGO Edition

Chao- When writing fan fics, some writers use programs like Microsoft Word or Works. Some programs come with tools that pick up misspelled or misused words. Sometimes writers only type what sounds correct through their ears. But what if the program is insistent of what you have is incorrect? Consider this line from Chao's YGO fan fic Offspring of Heroes, Chapter 11. Trouble in the Woods Part 2:

What was most peculiar about the bear were the gold chains wrapped around it.

Chao- Microsoft Word had insisted that this should be types as:

What were most peculiar about the bear were the gold chains wrapped around it.

Chao- Which is correct? Chao had asked an English professor at school, and she had said the first line was correct in grammatical purposes. Word does do a good job at catching lines that are not grammatically correct, but it is not always accurate. In this case, the teacher had explained that Word does not pick up well in long clauses. What was also troublesome was having the two to be verbs, was and were.

YChao- Since you mentioned this before the start class, did other students give their feedback?

Chao- Yeah, and some had asked why not rearrange the sentence to saying: "The gold chains were peculiar..."

YChao- You probably wouldn't have run into such a problem and confusion if you had taken their advice. So why go with your first choice?

Chao- Because there was a purpose in mind. Before that line, the bear was already established to be normal, a toy bear wearing human clothing. Authors can work around grammar if they have a purpose in mind. If someone asked you why you wrote a line in a certain manner, you'll need a good reason.

YChao- They can't reply with an "I don't know?" argument?

Chao- Nope. Ignorance of rules is not art. In this case, it was to show just how unnatural the chains were. Whether it's Word or another person's suggestion, if you as a writer have an idea set, then go for it. Otherwise, see if what you have is an honest mistake and try using the grammatically correct sentence/phrase/clause. You may see that the grammatically correct choice has a clearer message. You can work around it if you want something to be seen strong or you are making a point. (But this is for fictional and creative nonfiction pieces. You should probably not try this for academic papers unless your teacher allows it.)

Dr. Chao has a nice ring to it

Chao- So Chao has been reviewing some materials and classes for this semester and future semesters. Chao had planned to stop writing fan fics after graduating from college. Now the original graduation date has been pushed back. For how many semesters? Hopefully just one, but we'll see what'll happen. This gives Chao some extra time to finish current fan fics and promised sequels. Hopefully Chao can also post a few new ideas.

YChao and Agent Daisy- (shake heads)

Chao- Hey! Chao is trying! Chao spends a good amount of time studying at the library and asking teachers for help!

YChao and Agent Daisy- (raise eyebrows)

Chao- It's just those other darn classes and the arrogant teachers... Anyways! Chao has been looking at some graduate programs, and has anyone had any teachers that you refer to as "Doctor" instead of "Mister/Misses/Miss"?

YChao- Where are you going with this?

Chao- Well, there are some programs underneath the English department, some like Linguistics, Rehtoric and Composition; and English Literature.

Agent Daisy- (motioning paws for continuation)

Chao- So, Chao was thinking about going for such a degree after working for some time at a publishing company. Chao would like to gain a higher position than just editor. Plus, Dr. Chao has a nice ring to it.

You're a 90's kid if

Chao- Saw another meme (?) on some FF.net profiles and thought it would be fun to do. It looks like all that needs to be done is to bold anything that you remember.

Back when you put off the 5 hours of homework you had every night.
(Chao- Not the smartest thing to do for college, though.)
When light up sneakers were cool.
When you rented VHS tapes, not DVDs.

When gas was 0.95 a gallon & Caller ID was the new thing.
When we recorded stuff on VCRs.
When we called the radio station to request songs to hear off of our Walkmans.
When gameboy was a brick.
You did MASH to figure out your future
When you weren't cool unless you had a Starter jacket.
Way back.
Before we realized all this would eventually disappear.
Who would have thought you'd miss the 90's so much!
Post this in your profile if you remember these days . . . .
or if you smiled at one of these things.

Chao- Oh, the 90s.

Looking Forward to the Future

Chao- So while taking all these different English classes for college, Chao has really learned a whole lot, working with clauses, passive voice vs active voice, independent and dependent clauses, the difference between clauses and phrases, etc. There are some teachers who really understand grammar and creative writing, instead of just reading a boring book and getting a lecture on it. Chao likes being able to apply new education to some current, soon-to-be-published, and old fan fics. Looking back on old writings is both funny and embarrassing. Chao can’t believe there was a time where his and he’s were ever confused! What was even stranger was that no one pointed this out; Chao just got some reviews talking about placing spaces between dialogue and the past tense for verbs. Anyways, Chao has been doing better at applying grammar rules so reading won’t be so hard and confusing. And with this new knowledge, Chao is thinking about doing something more than just editing a few commas and spaces between paragraphs. Chao would like to take Chao’s favorite fan fic of all time and completely re-work it and submit it as a redo. When will it be posted? Not too long after graduating from college when studying English is completed. Which is Chao’s favorite fan fic? Guess you’ll have to wait! (Hint: It’s one that’s already been posted).

An FF.net Meme

Chao- Found a meme that Chao has been wanting to do. Why is it here instead of the FF.net profile? Because this author/blogger finds it annoying whenever an author has an extremely long profile. It’s even worse when they have little to no stories. Chao likes to keep it short, giving a few likes and dislikes, and a few words of advice. So, onwards with the meme!

1. "Do You Read Or Write Fanfiction?"

Chao- Some people like to only write and others just prefer to read. Chao likes to do both.

2. "When Did You First Start Reading/Writing Fanfiction?"

Chao- Started to read fan fics in elementary school. Started to write them in middle school.

3. "What Was Your First Fandom?"

Chao- Yu-Gi-Oh! Chao is pretty obsessed with this show, so Chao tried to find as much information as possible. And then Chao stumbled upon people writing these guys in weird stories. Most were pretty darn funny, and others had some great (Yugi) angst.

4. "First Ship"

Chao- None; don’t read and/or write them.

5. "What Website Do You Use The Most?"

Chao- DarkChao1663 pretty much uses FF.net. and Hotmail.

6. "What Do You Think Of Fanfiction.Net?"

Chao- It’s a really great place to read fan fics written by other fans. It’s cool that there are people who made an entire website just so fans could submit their stories in one place instead of looking around the Internet for fan pages. And at least most fans leave warnings at the beginning or in their summary.

7. "What Fandoms Have You Written In?"

Chao- Yu-Gi-Oh!, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Phineas and Ferb, Cats Don’t Dance... Cool, so far Chao has written for an anime, comic book, cartoon, and an animated movie!

8. "Parings?"

Chao- None; don’t read and/or write them.

9. "Any Fandoms You Would Like To Write In?"

Chao- Not really… Some categories are easier than others, though.

10. "Do Reviews Affect How You Write In Any Way?"

Chao- Yep. Chao doesn’t mind taking advice from other writers and feedback from fans. Although authors should focus on what they want to write, it’s important to hear what fans like or don’t like. It honestly helps to keep in mind what has and what hasn’t been working so far. Which matters more: You wrote out a story that means something to you, or you lazily tossed something together that received plenty of hits?

11. "Do You Use A Beta?"

Chao- Nope… Been wanting to… But too lazy to complete something on time. (Not to mention the Beta reader will need to be at least 19-years-old.)

12. "What ratings do you read/write?"

Chao- K through M. It’s pretty nice to expand audiences and how in depth a story can go, whether for language, fight scenes, chapter lengths, etc. And reading different ratings is also fun; you get different adventures and outcomes.

13. "What Warnings Have You Used On Your Fanfiction?"

Chao- Uh… Minor swearing; themes of depression, loneliness, and bullying; abuse; kidnapping situation and implied dark themes; mentioning of death and suicide; and… Guess that’s all for now… Pretty much the minor swearing one (some readers do have problems with that, especially when writing in kiddie fan fics).

14. "Do You Have Any Squirks?"

Chao- No idea what that means. Did you mean quirks? If yes, then Chao has had the habit of speaking in third person for years for author notes. Chao also likes to write two or three words in a row that start with the same letter.

Chao- "Squirks" is defined to be when someone finds something truly disturbing. In that case, that would be Yaoi/Yuri, mpreg, and genderbending.

15. "Have You Ever Stolen Something From Another's Person's Work?"

Chao- Nope. But what’s interesting about writers and artist is all the information and inspiration they get from reading other people’s works or opinions form from years and years. It’s stored in the back of their mind, so when they’re writing and suddenly get that inspiration it can be hard to know where it came from. (But if writers really are aware then they should give credit.)

16. "Favorite Fandom To Write/Read?"

Chao- Yu-Gi-Oh! There’s just so much Yugi torture to read!

17. "Favorite Pairing?"

Chao- None.

18. "How Long Should A Chapter Be?"

Chao- There is no set words or pages. If you open a book you’ll find that some chapters are longer than others. A chapter needs to be a length that can give readers insight about what’s happening so far, answering little questions, leaving clues, and end with them wanting more. (You can do cliffhangers, but that’s a personal choice, and most readers aren’t happy with them.)

19. "Do You Read/Write Drabbles?"

Chao- Possibly read a drabble or two, but never wrote one. That would be a good challenge, though.

20. "Any Fandoms You Avoid?"

Chao- Unless it was a category mentioned in question 7, then no. There are a few exceptions, but Chao doesn’t want to focus on anymore categories. It’d be too much to handle!

21. "Pairings You Avoid?"

Chao- All; don’t care if it’s canon or not.

22. "Warnings You Avoid?"

Chao- Yaoi/Yuri, pairings (canon and not), OCs with a main role (Chao is here to read canon characters and goofy adventures), gender bending (it’s just wrong), lemon/lime, mpreg, rape for entertainment, abuse for entertainment, crossovers (most of the time Chao has no idea what IS being crossovered), and for YGO, anything Abridged related. Chao would prefer it if writers leave those jokes and the videos to the master who comes up with them. It’s like eating pizza; you may love it, but having it for every meal in the same style from the same place over and over can get really boring.

23. "Do The Number Of Reviews Tell You How Good A Story Is?"

Chao- No, a story should be based on your opinion; you decide if you want to continue reading. Although for most fan fics, all writers have to do is put Yaoi (canon or not) and the reviews skyrocket. Writers should write what they want for the fun, not for appreciation or breaking their principles. Plus, not everyone has an FF.net account, or is aware that guests can leave reviews, so you never know who is reading your story in silent while enjoying every piece of it.

24. "What Do You Think Of Mary Sues?"

Chao- We all started somewhere. Some fans are just drowned with their love of the show they might not be aware their OC is a Mary Sue. There is nothing wrong with having someone who is strong (physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally), but flaws allow readers to hold empathy with them and connect. When creating an OC, ask yourself this: Does this character really need to be that strong, or are you just afraid of your OC being rejected from the public or community fan base?

25. "Have You Ever Flamed Someone?"

Chao- Yep….. And Chao is so sorry for doing so! Been on FF.net for some time, and Chao was a pretty big brat years ago… So if there are old reviews that anyone happens to come by, or if an old author is reading this, Chao is sincerely sorry for being such a brat!

26. "Have You Ever Been Flamed?"

Chao- Probably. Deleted some old stories years ago because they were going nowhere. But if someone does flame, Chao just keeps it up; too lazy to hit delete. But there is a difference between being flamed and getting a constructed review. Writers should take a moment and see if there’s any truth in their criticism. Although people shouldn’t be so rude, writers should learn to take criticism without getting so hurt. Some readers honestly see potential in a good story and would like for it to be molded better. In addition, this is why writers need to review their work and correct any errors before submitting the final piece. If not, then they leave themselves open and give the flamer the chance and material to flame.

27. "Anything Else?"

Chao- Writing is a good way for self-expression. If something seems odd don't be afraid to look at your work again. Sometimes a second eye is helpful for improvement, so go out and look for a helpful beta reader. Don't be in a rush to post; it may be best to allow ideas to develop so you have something to work with. Be kind and leave reviews for others. Let the author know you appreciate their work and want to know what happens next. However, don't be discouraged by mean readers. Only you, the writer, can say what is about to take place. It is YOUR story. Take pride in it.

A Writing Tip: Building Suspense in a Simple Sentence: YGO Edition

Chao- While taking a few English classes over the past few semesters in college, a couple of teachers had offered some very good tips on actual writing, whether for short fiction or academic papers. Most of us understand that for any proper English sentence, it needs a subject and a verb. There are different ways to write out what we want each sentence in each story to say.

Example 1: Yugi walked into his bedroom, carrying his heavy backpack. He placed it on his desk and sat down. He was happy to be done with school as he flipped through his pack of Duel Monster cards and talked with his friend.

Example 2: Carrying his heavy backpack, Yugi walked into his bedroom. He placed it on his desk and sat down. Flipping through his pack of Duel Monster cards and talking with his friend, he was happy to be done with school.

Chao- So what’s the same thing within in these two?

YChao- They were written by a lazy author

Chao- ………

YChao- They both lack Yugi torture.
Chao- ……….

YChao- Fine. They’re both about Yugi.

Chao- And what’s the difference between the two examples?

YChao- I pretty much got the same, boring content out of it.

Chao- It’s all about suspense!

YChao- I don’t get it…

Chao- Yes, both are about Yugi and what’s he doing. The first exampled has the subject first followed by the verb in all three sentences. Chao had turned in a paper like this for a review, and the teacher had said it gets boring reading the same pattern over and over again. She suggested switching things around, as can be seen in Example 2.

YChao- Write a better example!

Chao- Ok, fine.

Example 3: Yugi ran down an isolated ally, fearing for his life. He passed by empty boxes and dirty puddles. He hoped he could be reunited with Yami as his heart pumped with great anxiety. He had to get away from Bakura first.

Example 4: Yugi ran down an isolated ally, fearing for his life. Passing by empty boxes and dirty puddles, he had to get away from Bakura first. He hoped he could be reunited with Yami as his heart pumped with great anxiety.

Chao- Better?

YChao- I guess. Could you write Yugi getting beaten up or something?

Chao- …Anyway, it’s good for writers to find ways to write in new styles. Readers may not know exactly how you made something so interesting, but it’s good to have different patterns, even if it’s just for something as simple as switching around subjects and verb spots. This is what’s called suspense; it’s created very easily just by positioning the subjects and verbs. They can be simple like in these examples, or very long like done in some Edgar Allen Poe works. (He’s the one who wrote The Raven, yes?) It just depends on what you, the writer, like. (Unless it’s an academic paper, in which case you’re better off writing just what the teacher wants to hear.)

YChao- You also had four sentences in Example 3 while Example 4 had three.

Chao- That’s called Revision, and there’ll be an entry for that topic another time. Chao will just be giving some advice as these classes go on.

YChao- They better have Yugi torture! It’ll be a surefire way for readers and writers to understand what the heck you’re talking about!

Chao- Hope this helped!

Darn You, Commas!

Chao- With school coming up, and maybe some have already started, we all have different papers and fan fics to be writing. Chao would just like to share one page from a really good writing resource's page that Chao was introduced to as a freshman in college.

Really good webiste link: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/607/02/

Chao- So the website is Owl Purdue, and it's really helpful with English things, like comma usage or writing a sources page in the MLA, APA, Chicago, or any types of styles. Of course Googling whatever you need help understanding couldn't hurt either. That's what Chao does; if there's a problem with syntax, comma usage, or understanding grammar points, Chao likes to use Owl Purdue for fan fics and academic papers. And Chao will be happy to keep giving some points for this blog... so long as this email remains valid, which may expire soon.

YChao- Wait, what?

Chao- Oh, look, Gravity Falls is on!

News for August

Chao- So here's a little newsfeed about what's going on with some fan fics.

Yu-Gi-Oh! news: Got chapter 11 up for Offspring of Heroes. Hope those who have been reading it find it interesting! Where I Belong is getting worked on, too. Dunno when the next chapter will be finished. There is a one shot being worked on, The Vow, and hopefully it'll be done before school starts.

Phineas and Ferb news: Gonna try and re-work with The Value of a Smile and The Mysterious Book. There's also a one shot coming out soon, Ideas from the Heart.

Cats Don't Dance news: Got some inspiration to write a few scenes for up coming one shots and a whole story. Danny is so much fun to work with!

Chao- Since FF.net has allowed users to put up different pictures for fan fics, Chao has decided to put up different artworks. Just look at different fan fics through the avatar.

Made a List!

Chao- (doing a happy dance)

YChao- What are you doing?

Chao- Wha? Chao is just happy to be on a fan fiction list!

YChao- You? On a list?

Chao- Yep!

YChao- For what? Being a lazy author?

Chao- Hey! Some people actually like these fan fics.

YChao- What fan fics? They're just ones of Yugi being tortured.

Chao- Exactly! Anyways, Youngbountygirl of FF.net and dA had made a list of her top 5 YGO fan fics! And Chao is 5!

Link to list: http://youngbountygirl.deviantart.com/art/Top-5-Favorite-Completed-Fan-Fictions-319943608

Chao- It is pretty cool being on a list. And Chao will be on the look out to avoid any mistakes that have been mentioned. Thanks for the feedback, Younbountygirl!

Comic of Strength of Passion

Chao- Back in March Chao wrote a fan fic for Cats Don't Dance, Strength of Passion. There was one reader/reviewer who was so inspired by some one shot that she drew up 13 pages of a comic for the fan fic. DisneySweetHeart of FF.net aka RogersGirlRabbit of dA had done a great job some fantastic artwork based on words (with a few obvious edits). Thought you all would like to take a peek.

All Around Updates and News

Chao- M'kay, so the purpose of this entire blog is to announce status updates for new stores and new chapters. School will be starting Aug 23rd so hopefully a few updates can be completed before then.

YGO news: Offspring of Heroes has bits and pieces of future chapters written. A few future chapters need to be finished up and polished before they can be published. It should go smoothly if everything falls into place. Where I Belong has chapter 14 being written out. The problem with this fic is figuring out where to go after the pranks and party. Don't want to go into pointless drabble, but there may be a few chapters that will be one shot ideas. There are snipits of drama in unattatched documents, so we'll see where they can fall into place. There will also be a few one shots on the way, just to keep things interesting. Chapters and one shots will be up soon... eventually...

Chao-YGO fans, sorry about the wait on all these. Gonna try and watch some YGO episodes so the flow can get started again.

Phineas and Ferb news: The Value of a Smile and The Mysterious Book will go under a few edits. A few parts of future chapters have been written out, but it is difficult to know what's gonna happen next. Gonna aim for at least 10 chapters for The Value of a Smile.

Chao- PnF fans, sorry to those who have been very patient for the next chapters for either/both stories. Fell behind watching any new episodes so hopefully watching them will give some inspiration. Don't spoil what's gonna happen next!

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac news: Have a small idea for a one shot, but unsure of what direction it'll be taken in. Date of publication is currently unknown.

Cats Don't Dance news: Thank you all who have read Strength of Passion and/or The Music in My Heart! A lot of work was placed into those, and even though it was tough it was pretty fun. Watching the movie in the early A.M. is also always fun to do. There is one or two more one shots that are somewhat being written. Date of publication is currently unknown. July was such a wonderful month working with these guys! See you in the movies!

Chao- Boy, there sure are a lot of categories here. Hopefully you all will stick around to read whichever stories caught your attention.

YChao- Why don't you use your blog for something useful? if you just give updates about your story updates, you won't have a lot to say.

Chao- And?

YChao- Write something useful!

Chao- Like what!

YChao- Why not write some grammar points? You always write a whole lot when giving advice for your beta readings. Or at least give some links to grammar websites so those looking at this will actually learn more than reading from you.

Chao- Aren't fan fics enough?

YChao- Nope, plus you're extremely lazy and a terrible speller.

Chao- Yep... It's understandable that everyone has their own way to blog, so if you're reading this and don't have an account but would like to leave you ideas/thoughts/complaints/mindless typing, feel free to drop a PM in the FF.net account.
